Be Even More Secure: Remote Support with the RealWear HMT-1Z1

To be able to work optimally with remote support solutions, industrial goods companies such as plant and machine engineering often use Smartglass. Smartglasses are distributed by various suppliers on the market. On another page we have already described the Smartglass, or rather the intelligent headset from RealWear - the HMT-1. In the following we will now take a closer look at the HMT-1Z1 from RealWear. The big difference between the HMT-1 and the HMT-1Z1 is the ATEX Zone 1 and CSA C1/D1 certification of the HMT-1Z1. It is the world's first intrinsically safe, hands-free Android™ wearable computer within the tablet class for industrial workers. Overall, the HMT-1Z1 can be used under "extreme conditions" in areas where chemicals or hazardous substances and liquids are handled. Thus, the HMT-1Z1 ensures safe use in hazardous areas, flammable zones and dangerous environments.

How is the HMT-1Z1 constructed?

Like the HMT-1, the HMT-1Z1 from RealWear consists primarily of the bracket, the camera and the microdisplay. The bracket serves as a holder for the microdisplay and contains the electronics required for the control and function of the interfaces. Furthermore, the intelligent headset contains a rechargeable battery, a processor with memory, four microphones (A1, A2, B1, B2), a loudspeaker through which, the service expert's instructions sound, sensors, antennas, memory card slot, GPS and interfaces for WiFi, Bluetooth, USB etc.


Fields of Application of the HMT-1Z1

The HMT-1Z1's areas of application are as diverse as those of the HMT-1 - if not more so. For example, it can be used for the usual commissioning, assembly, inspection and maintenance of a machine, for the acceptance of special parts or for training. In addition to the application of remote support under "normal" working conditions, the HMT-1Z1 can also be used in hazardous areas, flammable zones or other dangerous environments. To illustrate this with an example, let us assume that a problem or error occurs on a tank truck. This is noticed by the tanker driver. The tanker driver reports this to the depot and the maintenance department first takes a closer look at the problem. If the maintenance department is unable to find the problem, it contacts a service technician from the tanker manufacturing company. In order for the service technician to have a precise insight into the problem, the employee of the maintenance department puts on the HMT-1Z1 - in the case of tanker trucks, the prerequisite is that the equipment required for maintenance is explosion-proof, which means that the Smartglass or intelligent headset used must also be explosion-proof. The service technician logs on to his desktop for a remote support session. He then passes on the session number that this individual session bears to the employee in the field - in this case, the maintenance worker.  He enters the session number on the HMT-1Z1 by voice control. 

Thanks to intelligent voice control, overhead straps or attachment of the headset to the bumper cap or helmet, the maintenance worker can work on the tanker with both hands. Both parties are now in the same live video session. The service technician can view the tank truck and the alleged source of the error with a virtual shoulder view. After examining the tanker, the service expert finds the problem thanks to a virtual live view of the problem and the maintenance employee can solve the problem with the help of the service technician - the service technician's travel to the site is no longer necessary and the problem is solved immediately.

Thus, the RealWear HMT-1Z1 offers a good basis for the use of remote support solutions for the risky work environment - to ensure optimal work safety.
